Hip Pain: Why You Have It And How To Make It Go Away

Posted on

If you experiences hip pain every day, speak to a chiropractor about your treatment options. Hip pain isn't something you should ignore, especially if you don't know why you have it in the first place. Before you give up and just live with your hip pain, learn why you have it and what you and your chiropractor can do to make it go away.

Causes of Hip Pain

Hip pain develops for numerous reasons, including sitting and lying down for long periods of time. Even the medications you take for other health problems can trigger pain in your hips. If you're very active in life, such as lifting weights or running long distances, pain and inflammation can develop in the muscles and tissues of your hips if you use them too much.

Sometimes, bone conditions like arthritis affect the health and functions of your hips. Bladder and kidney infections can also trigger pain in the pelvic regions, which later spreads to the hip bones and joints.

The best way to find the cause of your hip pain is to see your chiropractor for an exam.

Possible Chiropractic Treatments for Hip Pain

The chiropractor examines your hips, pelvis and back with X-rays and other types of imaging equipment. If the scans show signs of infection or severe inflammation, your chiropractor refers you to your regular doctor for further examination, such as blood tests and urinalysis, to find out if you have a medical problem that requires additional consideration.

After your regular doctor treats you, you return to the chiropractor for additional treatment. Your chiropractic treatments can include physical therapy to loosen up the muscles in your hips and TENS (a type of electrical nerve stimulation) to alleviate pain in the hips. Your chiropractor goes over every possible treatment option with you before moving forward.

Tips for Relieving Hip Pain at Home

You can do a few things at home to keep your hip pain at bay. Lying on your back at night with your knees slightly elevated on a pillow helps reduce stress on the nerves inside your lower body. Sometimes, the nerves in your hips pinch or press together when you lie on your sides too long.

Performing hip stretching exercises on a daily basis helps lubricate the joints of your hips. Lubricated joints are better equipped to withstand heavy weight lifting, running and other strenuous exercises.

You simply:

  • Stand with your legs hip-width apart
  • Place your hands on your hips or out to your side for balance
  • Tighten your abdominal muscles to help you control your movements and stay balanced
  • Lift one leg out to the side of your body as far as you can without feeling discomfort or pain
  • Lower the leg and repeat the exercise with the other leg

You only perform the exercise for 5 minutes to avoid overextending or overexerting your hips.
